My Approach

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become. Buddha

All of us, as we move through life, tell a multiple of stories to ourselves and others about our history. It is through our self-stories that we have developed a sense of who we are. Our stories are a fundamental means of making sense of one’s experiences.

However, when a problem arises, we find that our story no longer feels right. This is when unresolved trauma or past experiences can have an impact on how we relate to others, how we think/feel about ourselves, and how we function in the world. Counselling helps to revise old stories and construct new ones that have more meaning and relevance for your current life.

My aim is to work with you to resolve the issues affecting you by developing a deeper understanding, insight and healthier perspective. My approach is holistic and informed by the following therapeutic models:
  • Attachment -based approach- A framework of attachment principles to understand the impact of early experiences on adult mental health and development
  • Psychodynamic - To enable the individual to better understand and resolve current and relational issues through a deeper exploration of earlier unconscious and conscious experiences and emotions.
  • Gestalt - The exploration of the individual’s sense of Self through the principle of ‘Wholeness’ - the interrelatedness of words, emotions, thoughts, sensations, movements, perceptions and context.
  • Humanistic - The ability of individuals to intentionally grow and develop psychologically, intellectually and ethically.
  • Cognitive Behavioural - Basic techniques focussing on challenging and altering unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns.
  • Existential. - The exploration of the individual’s confrontation with the ‘ultimate concerns of death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness’.
  • Interpersonal Neurobiology - The joining of neuroscience and psychotherapy.

The aim of therapy is to bring the work to a satisfactory ending for you. To do this, there are regular, periodic reviews which allows us to take stock and assess how close we are towards bringing our work to a close.

    I offer long-term face-to-face work, short-term face-to-face work, and time-limited., and online counselling/coaching

"I had an attitude that no one could help me and I didn’t trust anyone, but Rhona helped me to slowly unravel the woollen ball of my past without pushing so that I can talk about things only when I am ready. Rhona’s skill as a therapist, and the benefits I have started to see as a result of a trusting and caring relationship has given me confidence. The bond between therapist and client to bring about change is very important, and this is definitely something we have." LK

”Your guidance has helped me to learn how to acknowledge, accept and deal with my emotions.” AC
